The Right White

For those of you who are done with Gray as a neutral, white is, well…. the new gray.

Maybe you feel white is too easy but believe me, once you come to considering this colour as a decorating option, you will realise it isn’t straight forward. Like all other colours, white can go in many directions. What undertone are you looking for? A cool white that has a nodding friendship with blue or green? Or are you looking for something with a warm undertone to combat gray, rainy days? Here are three whites from Benjamin Moore, which I use repeatedly.

Winds-Breath-OC-24

Winds Breath, OC-24, Benjamin Moore. A soft white that works well with beiges.

Chantily Lace

Winds Breath, OC-24, Benjamin Moore. A soft white that works well with beiges.

Cloud white

Cloud White, CC-40, on the wainscoting and trim work. The “decorators darling” of whites, in previous decades. Very creamy, this is a very good white for rooms that want a little extra warmth.

If you are looking for a cooler white, I would suggest OC-51, Intense White or CC-30 Oxford White. (No images at this time.)

Recent Work

Here are some examples of recent work. There may seem to be a common thread as the gray and gray/blue palette has been in such demand.

Golden Lights, Golden Nights

A favourite lighting store of mine, Pine Lighting, had the following lighting on display, the last time I went in. I would love to use these fixtures in a new home………

I have a weakness for light fixtures, and a weakness for gold and sparkle too, in the right setting. Matte gold finishes are quietly working their way back into fashion and I am delighted about it. This finish is nothing like the artificial brass opted for in the 80s and early 90s. (I have seen more than a few people shudder at the mention of that 80s look.)

This new finish is looks warm and worn, more subdued than brass. I have seen the new gold  working with organic subject matter and surfaces, like the branches in the light fixtures below.
